Beseen for adults

Beseen for adults logoWe are trailing the use of the beseen™ platform and will be running two distinct pilot schemes, one within our Core Adult Mental Health Teams and another within the Devon adult autism and ADHD service (DAANA).

The Adult Mental Health Teams will utilise the Beseen for Adults product to support the introduction of a digital self-assessment within Adult Community Mental Health Services. beseen will help clinicians gain a more complete understanding of need and support improved referral quality, more effective triage, better waiting-list management, reducing administrative burden, and provide a more personalised experience for people using this service.

Within the Devon adult autism and ADHD service a number of people who are currently awaiting assessment and on a waiting list will be invited to complete a simple questionnaire that will aid waiting-list management and provide detailed “sign-posting” and support for those that are waiting for a diagnosis.

What is the beseen platform?

The beseen platform is an online questionnaire that allows you to share, in your own words, why you are seeking help.

The platform is an easy and secure way to share your experiences and what you hope to get from your treatment. The information you provide helps our triage and assessment teams better understand your needs.

Using the beseen questionnaire does not replace our usual referral or assessment process. Completing it is completely optional - if you choose not to, you will still get the support you need.

Some patients said that completing it helped them prepare for their appointment with a healthcare professional.

How does the beseen platform work?

The Service or partner organisation to which you have been referred will review the referral and check if our services are suitable for you and whether using the beseen platform would be helpful for your assessment.

If it is, you will receive a secure text message link to access the questionnaire. Not everyone will receive a questionnaire, as this depends on your symptoms and the type of support you require.

You can complete the questionnaire on a mobile phone, or by copying the link into a browser on a laptop, desktop, or tablet. The questionnaire will guide you through the following types of questions:

•     questions about what you would like from treatment
•    multiple-choice questions about your experiences
•    questions about your current situation and sources of support
•    optional sections for specific experiences
•    space to describe things in your own words

For more information on beseen about how the platform works read our Beseen FAQs below.

Information collected by the beseen platform

Generally the beseen questionnaire will ask about the things listed below but could be used to simply ask questions about your experience while waiting to be seen:

•    Mood and depression
•    Different types of anxiety
•    Panic
•    Sleep difficulties
•    Trauma-related experiences (optional)
•    Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours (optional)
•    Eating concerns (optional)
•    Alcohol use
•    Drug use
•    Impact on daily life
•    Social support and circumstances

Please note: The beseen platform is not suitable for people experiencing a mental health crisis. The platform is not monitored 24/7. If you need urgent help now, please find support here.

Completing the questionnaire

For an assessment the questionnaire usually takes 40-60 minutes to complete, though this may vary. You can save your progress to return to it later if you need to. Usually there will be a specified time by which you will need to complete the questionnaire. If it’s not finished within this time, the link will expire and any information you’ve entered will not be sent to the Mental Health Team. In certain circumstances a reminder message may be received to help prompt completion of the questionnaire.

Before any sensitive sections, you’ll see content warnings explaining what’s coming next. Some sections are optional - you can choose whether to complete them, and you can discuss these areas later with your healthcare professional when you feel ready.

The beseen platform includes:
•    Clear explanations of what will be asked
•    Options to take breaks when needed
•    Automatic saving of your progress
•    Information on how to access urgent help if required
•    A combination of multiple-choice questions and free-text section

Please be open and honest in your responses - this helps our Mental Health Team understand your experiences and provide the most appropriate support. Once completed, your responses will be shared securely with the Mental Health Team who will be arranging your assessment.

Beseen FAQs

Do I have to complete the beseen platform online questionnaire?
No. Completing the beseen platform questionnaire is completely optional, but many patients find it a helpful way to prepare for their assessment and it can provide helpful information to tailor your care. The support you receive from Devon Partnership NHS Trust will not be affected if you choose not to complete it. You will still receive the support you need.

Can my family, friend or carer complete it for me?
It is important that your answers reflect your experience and that you feel that you can be open and honest in your responses. However, a trusted family, friend or carer can support you to complete it, and you may want to consider who you could seek support from if you find the questions difficult to answers. Get urgent support if needed.

Is the beseen platform suitable if a diagnosis for neurodiversity is suspected?
At the current time the beseen platform doesn’t specifically ask questions about neurodiversity, however this may change in the future and will be considered as part of the ADHD and Autism Service pilot.
Within the Adult Services pilot, it could help support the identification of mental health conditions, which people with neurodivergent symptoms or traits could also be experiencing and receive support for.

Is the beseen platform available in other languages?
Currently, the beseen platform is only available in English. If you need translation services, we will offer you an appointment with a practitioner and provide an interpreter to support you.

Where are the beseen platform reports and data stored?
The beseen platform reports will be added to your Electronic Patient Record (a secure digital platform that holds your personal information, contact details and medical history). For more information about how your data is used, please read the Devon Partnership NHS Trust privacy notice.

The pre-assessment questionnaire is provided by our partner beseen platform who are a data processor for us. The information you provide is not shared with them in an identifiable form. The responses collected from the questionnaire are stored securely in encrypted services that are compliant with UK data protection regulations. You can read the Beseen Platform privacy policy on their website.

Can I see the report the beseen platform generates about me?
It is our policy to keep you informed about your care and involve you in the process, however, the report generated by Beseen Platform is aimed at mental health professionals and may contain terminology that is confusing to non-mental health professionals.

Therefore, we feel that it is more meaningful to go through the report with a member of our mental health team. To do this, the information you provide through the questionnaire can be reviewed at your initial assessment.

If you wish to access the report or any of the information stored about you, you can request information under Data Protection Legislation, by emailing: dpt.ig@nhs.net.

Who will my report be shared with?
The report will be available to people involved directly in your care; within the service you have been referred too and trusted partner organisations who may supporting your care.

Can I stop the SMS/text message notification reminders from the beseen platform?
Yes, you can turn off notifications / opt out of SMS by using the link on the SMS reminder text messages. After clicking on the link, you will then not receive any further messages.

How much time do I have to complete the questionnaire?
The link to register on the beseen platform and complete the questionnaire will expire after 30 working days.

Please ensure it is completed within this timeframe, so your responses are available ahead of your assessment appointment.
