Patrick the Pony brings a smile to Beech Ward

Patrick the Pony brings a smile to Beech Ward Patients, families and staff at Beech Ward in Torbay recently enjoyed a special visit from Patrick the Pony, funded through Open Up, the official charity of our organisation.

Patrick’s visits create opportunities for people to relax, connect and enjoy meaningful shared experiences. During this latest visit, he brought comfort and conversation throughout the ward, helping create a calm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone involved.

Watch a short video reel of Patrick's visit.

For some patients, meeting Patrick sparked special memories from earlier in life. One patient, who previously ran a riding school, and another who had established a smallholding as part of a school they created, both became animated as they shared stories and memories connected to animals.

The visit also provided valuable moments for families spending time with loved ones. Sometimes conversation can be difficult when someone is unwell, but Patrick helped create a shared experience that brought people together and offered something positive to talk about long after the visit had ended.

Animal-assisted visits can have a powerful impact, helping people feel more connected to the world around them and providing moments of comfort, calm and joy.

Patrick’s visit is just one example of how your support helps create meaningful experiences for patients, carers and staff across Devon and beyond.
