Two of the largest meeting spaces at Torbay Health and Wellbeing Clinic have been transformed following the installation of acoustic sound-dampening panels.

Funded by Open Up, the official charity of the Devon Partnership NHS Trust and Mental Health Matters, the panels reduce echo and residual noise while also bringing colour and character to the rooms. The improvements have helped create calmer, more welcoming spaces for staff, patients and visitors.

The positive impact has already been recognised across the service.

Caitlin Foster, Team Manager for The Moorings, said: "As a staff group, we have found the installation of the sound-dampening very beneficial to reduce the echoing and residual noise, particularly when we have simultaneous calls or calls with walk-ins! It has allowed for the environment to be calmer, which is vital to the service."

Feedback from people using the service has also been encouraging.

One service user said: "It's amazing that sound reduction has been taken into account in a mental health setting, and hopefully the impact will be a calmer and more peaceful environment that can only be a positive in promoting wellbeing."

The project highlights the importance of considering the physical environment in mental health settings. By reducing noise and creating more comfortable spaces, the clinic has improved the experience of both staff and people accessing support, helping to promote wellbeing and positive interactions throughout the service.

From improving care environments to funding innovative projects and new opportunities for recovery, Open Up helps create lasting change across Devon and beyond.
